Ordering human tissues

Héma-Québec has been a supplier of human tissues for transplants for over 20 years. In that capacity, it has been managing the only human tissues bank in Quebec since 2001 and is responsible for collecting, processing, qualifying, and distributing human tissues in order to meet the needs of Quebec’s hospitals.

Mandate as sole distributor of human tissues

As a strategic partner in the health care system, Héma-Québec currently supplies most of these products through the human tissues bank, with the rest coming from international suppliers. As of December 2, 2024, under the new mandate given to it by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, the organization will provide the entire supply of human tissues to Quebec’s hospitals.

To take on these new responsibilities, Héma-Québec will establish a centralized purchasing system. A product traceability and adverse reaction tracking registry will also be set up further to a recommendation from the Comité de biovigilance du Québec. The organization has also formed consultant groups bringing together experts in the various types of transplants. With their medical expertise, Héma-Québec will be able to guide the selecting of products and ensure a supply that covers all the needs of the hospitals.

Recall that human tissue donation from a single person can help up to 20 people and that the main tissues transplanted are bones, heart valves, tendons, and corneas.

Héma-Québec takes all measures necessary to ship products as soon as possible, regardless of the circumstances.
