Washed red blood cells
Packed red blood cells are washed to significantly reduce the quantity of various plasma proteins or other substances that can cause adverse reactions. This product contains more than 75% of the red blood cells that were in the original product. The washing removes almost all other residual substances (anticoagulant, platelets, leukocytes, and potassium).
The washing method used at Héma-Québec is done in a closed circuit, and the suspension medium is an injectable AS-3 (additive) solution as a preservative.

Washed red blood cells have a similar function and post-transfusion survival as AS 3/SAGM packed red blood cells.
