Regular red blood cells

All our allogeneic packed red blood cells are partially leukoreduced. These products meet the following standard: less than 5 x 106 leukocytes per bag.

AS-3 packed red blood cells from whole blood

AS-3 packed red blood cells from whole blood The AS-3 packed red blood cells are prepared from the whole blood collected in a CP2D anticoagulant solution. The packed red blood cells have a hemoglobin greater than or equal to 35 g per bag and a hematocrit less than or equal to 0.80 L/L. This product contains red blood cells to which the additive AS-3 was added after most of the plasma was extracted (the residual quantity is estimated at 30 ± 7 mL).

SAGM packed red blood cells from whole blood

SAGM packed red blood cells are prepared from whole blood taken in a CPD anticoagulant solution. The packed red blood cells have a hemoglobin greater than or equal to 35 g per bag, a hematocrit less than or equal to 0.80 L/L. This product contains red blood cells to which the additive SAGM was added after most of the plasma was extracted (the residual quantity of plasma is estimated at 24 4 mL).

Action

These components increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood by increasing the mass of red blood cells in circulation.

Main indications

Packed red blood cells are indicated for treating symptomatic oxygen-carrying deficits in anemic receivers. They are also used during exchange transfusions.

Contraindications

Packed red blood cells must not be used when the anemia can be corrected with specific medications. Packed red blood cells are not indicated for treating non-hemorrhagic hypovolemia.

Dosage and administration

Packed red blood cell transfusion in an adult increases their hemoglobin by about 10 g/L or the hematocrit from 0.03 L/L to 0.04 L/L. The dosage depends on the recipient’s clinical condition and their weight and height. For a pediatric transfusion, the usual dosage is 15 mL/kg, and this increases the hemoglobin rate by about 20 g/l.

The transfusion must be completed within four hours after the product leaves the controlled environment.

When reducing the LBP volume transfused is indicated, the packed red blood cells can be centrifuged to remove all or part of the additive. This procedure must be done right before the transfusion.

If reducing the additive content is indicated, it is sometimes desirable to remove it through washing or centrifuging and removal of the supernatant and to re-suspend the red blood cells in albumin, injectable 0.9% (USP) sodium chloride solution, or plasma in order to facilitate administration of it.

Storage

AS-3 or SAGM packed red blood cells taken from a sealed device must be kept between 1°C and 6°C. Under those conditions, the shelf life of the red blood cells is 42 days.
